Bride-To-Be – Biggest Mistakes – Starting too Late

Without doubt, one of the biggest mistakes I’ve come across by Brides-to-be is starting too late. It’s easy to look at transformation photos and immediately think that you can go from 40% body fat to toned and slender with 18% body fat in a matter of weeks, but unfortunately it doesn’t work like that.

What many “transformation” photos fail to disclose is that the participants have had a previous training history where they were very active, gained substantial strength and have significant muscle mass. If it’s April now and your wedding is in July, then I would really encourage you to start making some changes now. The earlier you start, the less you’ll stress and worry and the more progress you’ll make. Physical changes take time and it’s not as predictable as you might think.

The way your body changes will be different from anyone else so just because someone “did it” in three months, (whatever “it”is) it doesn’t mean you’ll see the same amount of change in that time. Your best bet is to start TODAY.

This can help you make sustainable changes in you habits which will last beyond your wedding and you won’t hate exercise, good food and life in general. I once had a bride-to-be come to me and asked if I could help them change their arms. I said, “Sure. When’s your wedding?” She said, “three weeks.” I had to reassure her that I’m a Personal Trainer and not a Cosmetic Surgeon. But in all seriousness, three weeks isn’t a lot of time to see massive changes so make sure you give yourself as much time as possible.

The longer you have, the more muscle you can build, the more fat you can reduce. Your body can only build muscle and burn fat at a certain rate. It’s a scientific process and you can’t force or rush that beyond a certain point. If you have a year or eighteen months then this gives you great scope to see and feel amazing changes, build through some phases, improve your technique, get the most out of your workouts and make simple habit changes over time.

Don’t leave yourself a few weeks before your wedding to start a training programme or tracking your nutrition. Start early, even if you’re starting off slowly. Then you can gradually ramp it up as your big day approaches.

If you have left it too late I’d recommend that you do a number of things to make sure you FEEL amazing on your day.

  1. Eat well so you aren’t bloated – think vegetables, fruit and lean meat.
  2. Drink lots of water so your skin is in the best possible condition.
  3. Get at least eight hours of sleep every night.
  4. Avoid and manage stress through long walks, or short, intense workouts to release lots of feel good hormones. (endorphins)

No matter when your wedding is, I want to assure you that you should feel confident no matter what. Your friends and family are there just for you and they want you to feel amazing all day so enjoy it from start to finish and don’t worry about any other details. If you stress or worry about little details or hold regrets, I guarantee you’ll look back in a year and wonder why you did.
