Strength & Mobility for Runners

In order to stay injury free, you need a balanced body with resilient strength.

Why do Runners need strength and mobility work?

iNJURY PREVENTION

While strength and mobility work won't guarantee that you'll never sustain injuries, it has been proven to dramatically reduce the risk, as empirical studies have shown as well as from my own experience from training runners.

core stability

Core work is well known to benefit runners although crunches and sit ups offer few transferable benefits to running. Instead, stabilising exercises are generally the best way to go.

posterior chain strength

Posterior chain work is essential for runners, primarily to strengthen the glutes, hamstrings and erector spinae muscles.

Mobility

Mobility work is often a neglected element in many runners schedules but is necessary to prevent injuries through achieving fuller range of motion, strengthening weak positions and aiding recovery.

SIngle Leg strength

No matter what type of running you prefer, single leg work is important to improve single leg hip strength, balance and stability as you spend the bulk of your time on one leg while running.

MUSCLE EFFICIENCY

Strength, mobility & endurance training combines methods of training into the same program. Adding strength exercises and plyometric-type exercises to a running specific program is advantageous for runners to improve strength and running efficiency.

While strength and mobility work doesn't guarantee that you'll never sustain injuries, it has been proven to dramatically reduce the risk, as empirical studies have shown as well as from my own experience in training runners.

My running clients have also been able to steadily improve their Personal Best times across 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, Full Marathon as well as Mountain runs.
