Fact Checking Cellulite

Cellulite is a topic which has so many false beliefs attached to it, so I thought it would be helpful to share some facts on it.

1) Cellulite is characterised by dimples in the skin and is caused by the herniation of subcutaneous fat within fibrous connective tissue.

2)There is no conclusive explanation as to its presence or prevalence.

3) 98% of women have cellulite.

4) It tends to be much more common among women than men and genetics do play a considerable role.

5) Cellulite is commonly found in the buttocks and thighs but can be present in other areas.

6) It can be present in individuals irrespective of their Body Mass Index (BMI).

7) Excessively high carbohydrate diets can cause excessive insulin levels (hyperinsulinemia) and promote fat formation (lipogenesis).

8) A sedentary lifestyle impedes blood flow, causing alterations in areas which are prone to cellulite.

9) Pregnancy often amplifies the impact of cellulite through insulin secretion and prolactin, which leads to fat formation and fluid retention.

10) Weight loss can reduce the severity and impact of cellulite, but not always.

There is no single method that has been proven to be 100% effective in reducing cellulite but smart nutrition, adequate hydration and working the muscles where cellulite is most common (glutes, quads, hamstings etc through squats, hip thrusts, deadlifts, lunges, step ups etc) have been often cited as the most effective ways to do so.
